Banga Soup: A Nigerian Classic, Made Simple

A Timeless Delicacy from the Niger Delta

Originating from the Urhobo and Itsekiri communities of Delta State and embraced across the Niger Delta (known as Ofe Akwu in Igbo culture), Banga soup is one of Nigeria's most celebrated heritage dishes. Its rich, velvety palm fruit broth and complex botanical aroma make it an unforgettable culinary experience.

For many outside Nigeria or in fast-paced cities, preparing Banga soup from scratch can feel intimidating. However, with the right sequence and pre-blended traditional aromatics, you can recreate this Delta classic in under an hour.

Key Ingredients for Authentic Flavor

  • Palm Fruit Extract: Pure concentrate extracted from boiled oil palm nuts.
  • PBL Banga Spice Seasoning: An authentic artisan blend of roasted Beletete leaves, Oburunbebe stick aromatics, and Rogojie.
  • Fresh Catfish & Dried Fish: Traditional dried catfish or Mangala fish gives the soup its rich, smoky seafood foundation.
  • Assorted Meats: Beef chuck, cow tripe (shaki), or goat meat boiled until fork-tender.
  • Periwinkles & Ground Crayfish: For sweet oceanic depth.
  • Oburunbebe Stick: Kept whole in the pot during simmering and removed before serving.

Step-by-Step Preparation

  1. Simmer the Palm Concentrate: In a wide pot or traditional earthenware pot, add the palm fruit concentrate diluted with rich meat stock. Bring to a vigorous boil for 15 minutes until the oil begins to rise.
  2. Add Proteins & Seasonings: Add your cooked assorted meats, dried fish, ground crayfish, and 2 tablespoons of PBL Banga Spice Seasoning. Allow to cook for another 10 to 12 minutes as the soup thickens into a glossy, velvety consistency.
  3. Add Fresh Catfish & Periwinkles: Gently lower cleaned fresh catfish steaks and washed periwinkles into the bubbling soup. Reduce heat and simmer gently for 8 minutes so the delicate fish stays intact.
  4. Finish with Herbs: Crush a pinch of dried Beletete leaves or fresh scent leaves between your palms and scatter over the soup. Simmer for 2 minutes and turn off the heat.

Serving Suggestions

Serve steaming hot with yellow cassava starch (Usi), pounded yam, or boiled white rice. The combination of rich palm lipids, aromatic herbs, and fresh seafood creates a comforting harmony that honors centuries of culinary tradition.
